When Jughead and Sandy catch on to the scheme, they decide to turn the tables and pretend to be in love… or are they?! It’s another intriguing chapter in this 4-part epic! Last year’s “Bad Boy Trouble” set the comics world on its ear as the teens were depicted in a realistic style. THE ARCHIE PREQUEL “FRESHMAN YEAR” GETS IN FULL SWING IN ARCHIE #588!

THE ARCHIE PREQUEL “FRESHMAN YEAR” GETS IN FULL SWING IN ARCHIE #588!

In the tradition of such famous comic book series and mini-series as John Byrne’s “Superman: the Man of Steel,” Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One” and Marvel’s “Ultimate” line comes the latest comic book icon to get the “prequel” treatment: Archie!   That’s right, now you, the reader can travel back in time with Archie and his friends to their very first year in high school in this five-part epic storyline we’re calling THE FRESHMAN YEAR SAGA!

It all began last issue (ARCHIE COMICS #587) with a poignant prologue called “The Summer Before,” exploring how the famous friends who just graduated junior high would deal with their pending positions as high school seniors.  Now, in issue #588’s “Freshman Year: Fall Semester,” Archie and his friends are starting the fall semester of their first high school year.  Having survived a summer that saw the departure of Jughead and bickering parents, the gang arrives at high school… to find elementary school Principal Mr. Weatherbee has now become the high school Principal!  But it’s not just about reunions at Riverdale High.  Archie also makes a new friend in Pencilneck G., although he prefers his more laid-back buddy Jughead.  He also makes some new enemies in Jared McGerk and his band of bullies!  Along the way the other classic faculty members are introduced, as well as Pop Tate and his Chok’lit Shop!  It’s the funniest first year of high school ever!

This special storyline is brought to you by none other than fan-favorite writer Batton Lash.  No stranger to Archie Comics, the famed writer of the “Wolff & Byrd” series turned the comic industry upside down in 1994 when he penned the unlikely Archie/Marvel cross-over comic, “Archie Meets the Punisher.”  Many thought it would never work, but Batton’s ingenious script won over even the toughest skeptics, and the comic wound up being not only one of Archie’s biggest-selling issues ever, but also one of the most highly-acclaimed.  Batton returned the following year with another well-received story arc appearing across several Archie titles.  The “House of Riverdale” was a loving tribute to the type of serio-comic, spooky mysteries so prevalent in the vintage “Life with Archie” series.  Handling the art chores is “Scrapyard Detectives” creator and popular Archie artist/writer Bill Galvan.  This is one “year” you can’t afford to miss!

Fernando Ruiz's Free Comic Book Day Report

ImageHi Guys,

Yesterday I was a guest artist for Free Comic Book Day at Dewey's Comic City in Madison, NJ. I've done every FCBD at Dewey's since FCBD began. Dewey's is a bright pleasant, very family friendly neighborhood store in the nice college-town of Madison. Dewey's has always had a very nice Archie display right at the front of his store and has always been a big supporter.
I was there signing books and drawing sketches from 1:30 to 3:30 and it was packed the entire time. According to Dan Veltre, owner of the store, it looked to be his best attended FCBD ever.
The number one character that I was most asked to draw was as might be expected Iron Man! It seemed that everyone had gone to see the movie the night before and everyone...parents included...loved it. Even non-comic book reading moms found it accessible and entertaining. It was funny to note though how few people had stayed for the surprise scene at the end of the movie AFTER the credits had rolled. The SECOND most requested character though was SONIC THE HEDGEHOG who was requested by children as well as college-age fans.
The event was covered by the DAily Record and appeared in today"s (Sunday's) edition, but you can read all about it...and see a gallery of pics here:
It was a fun time and I'm already slated to doing FCBD at Dewey's next year.
Looking forward to it!
Fernando

THE ACTION & EXCITEMENT OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG’S CLASSIC ADVENTURES LIVES ON

THE ACTION & EXCITEMENT OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG’S CLASSIC ADVENTURES LIVES ON IN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #8!

In November, 2006, Archie Comics offered Sonic readers both new and old the opportunity to relive the earliest adventures of their favorite hero with the release of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #1.  Now, here we are on the eve of the release of the 7th volume, and everyone agrees: this new classic reprint series is a hit!  Fans are jumping at the chance to travel back in time to where it all began.  Back in 1993, Sonic the Hedgehog sped his way from video games to comic books.  Almost 200 issues later, "the blue blur" can lay claim to having the most successful comic book career of all video game heroes.  Now, SONIC THE HEDEHOG ARCHIVES, a thrilling series of upscale reprints, lets you revisit Sonic’s early days in a premium yet affordable format.  These special 5 x 7 & ½ inch editions contain 112 action-packed pages, faithfully re-colored and printed on superior stock, with a low cover price of only $7.49 US!  Picking up where the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #7 left off (which reprinted the original Sonic series issues #25 through #28), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #8 brings fans these classic tales from issues #29 through #32 – including exciting events like Sally’s roboticization, the introduction of Dulcy the dragon, the solo adventures of Knuckles which led to his regular comic book, and other historic occurrences!  Stories include:

“Steel-Belted Sally” (issue #29): The unthinkable happens: Sally is robotcized!  Also features the first appearance of Dulcy the Dragon!
“Growing Pains, Part II” (issue #29): Tails has fallen in love with Fiona the Fox, but his new sweetheart may not be what she seems!  This story led directly into the popular “Sonic’s Buddy Tails” mini-series.
“The Return of Uncle Chuck” (issue #30): Since the start of the series, Uncle Chuck has been a mindless robot in Robotnik’s servitude. But when the villain’s latest experiment goes awry, Uncle Chuck regains his free will and aids the Freedom Fighters in their fight against oppression!
“Who Keeps Stealing My Chaos Emeralds?!” (issue #30): A Coconut solo story of slapstick proportions!
“Knuckles Chaotix Sneak-Peak” (issue #30): The two-page lead-in to the famous “Knuckles Chaotix Super Special” introduces Knuckles’ team The Chaotix and foreshadows Robotnik’s plans to capture them all.
“A Robot Rides the Rails” (issue #31): Robotnik delivers his new super-robot, the Dynamac 3000 to the western coast by rail, and it’s up to the Freedom Fighters and Geoffrey St. John’s Rebel Underground to derail the treacherous train trip!
“Lost… and Found!” (issue #31): A follow-up to the “Chaotix Super Special,” Knuckles must rescue the Chaotix and Arhimedes, leading to the much-loved Knukcles mini-series.
“Tundra Road Part 1” (issue #31): Rotor must return to his homeland where Robotnik has brainwashed everyone in sight!  Can he stop Robotnik’s “chilling” plot to bring on a new ice age?
“Blast from the Past” (issue #32): The Freedom Fighters find themselves up against a swatbot ambush, the robotic fangs of Muttski, and a Mobian Cavebear in this action-packed adventure!
“Prisoners!” (issue #32): The Chaotix are trapped by Archimedes – is he friend or foe?!
“Tundra Road, Part 2 (issue #32): Rotor’s mission to rescue his family and countrymen takes a dangerous turn, and it’s up to the Arctic Freedom Fighters to join the fight!
